Following up on my interest in her article on Miriam Johnson’s garden, Lori Basheda sent me another story about a special person, Hortense Miller, in Laguna Beach, CA. She started her garden in 1959 and you can take two hour guided tours by reservation for free. Hortense, who passed away at the age of 99, gave the land to the city in 1976.
Austin, Bella and Madison enjoyed looking at the birds, insects and squirrels at the Oregon Garden in Silverton, OR (This is well worth a visit as well – I gave it its own note!!), so maybe kids would do fine here if mom and dad, or grandma and grandpa, would point out creatures of interest while they enjoy looking at all the native plants in the gardens.

Grandpa Ron and I are members of the Tahoe Rim Trail Association which maintains and enhances the trail around all of Lake Tahoe! As of April 17, 2009, the trail is still snowed in! See the Tahoe Rim Trail website for lots more interesting information about hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding on the trail.

OK, Michele told me about the Ice House Trail on Mt. Baldy and how great it was for hiking with little kids. I found this great write-up of the trail. There is also a link to Bob and Nancy Ulrich’s Hiking pages. Unfortunately, not all of their photos come up on my machine, but for hikers there are lots of ideas available!
BUT then I clicked on MountainBikeBill.com who also rode the Ice House Trail – only this one is in Utah. BUT, he has an AWESOME site with totally awesome pictures in his blog and on his trail descriptions. You do not have to be a mountain biker to enjoy his site. Check it out!

On a rainy day (and there are a lot of those in Portland, OR) Austin and his friends love to visit the Portland Children’s Museum. He even had his first birthday party there.
Last weekend in Monterey, CA, we discovered the My Museum where the kids were totally having fun.
As a kid, Austin’s Mommy enjoyed the Children’s Museum in San Jose, CA.
All of these children’s museums are just awesome places to explore! While on the internet I stumbled on the My Museum.com for the Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley in Bryan, TX. It has some very interesting activities as well.
Co-worker Leslie says her grandson absolutely loves the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, CA. Check that one out, too!
Found a Told U So blog entry for the Children’s Museum in La Habra. That traveling exhibit of “Ring of Fire” (through June 14) looks fun, too! The blog has LOTS of ideas on it, as well!
The Tucson Children’s Museum has several fun exhibits. Here are some pointers.
At the Carson City, Nevada Children’s Museum there are lots of interesting programs going on as well as the on-going exhibits.

Mono Lake in California is a very interesting lake to visit. There are unusual formations sticking out of the water. Here is a list of activities to do for free or little money around the lake. The Mono Lake Committee Gift Shop, located on Main Street in Lee Vining, CA, is full of really neat mementos, gifts, books and native American Indian items.”http://www.monolakecommittee.org/”>

Grandma Sue welcomes you to her first blog! Austin and Grandpa Ron’s appearance in Grandma Sue’s first book (Click my “Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too! page) is fast becoming a reality. The BookSurge team is doing a super job and consequently we have only had a few redlines. Today I got my first look at the whole inside of the book. I am so excited because it looks so great! You’ll see it first here, when it becomes available on Amazon.com!
