Tomorrow, Feb 5, 2012 at 10 AM, the Portland Children’s Museum‘s newest traveling exhibit, The Wonder of Learning: The Hundred Languages of Children Exhibit from Reggio Emilia, Italy, will be open to the public. Those of you who know me well also know that I’m big on education and languages. This exhibit captured my interest immediately! Do click on the link to explore the thought behind the new, more museum-traditional (hands-off) type of exhibit, along with concepts, questions and answers.
“Exploring education through multi-media galleries that speak to how young children imagine, invent and create, this exhibit expands the potential to support creative thinking and collaboration in our schools and communities.”
Viewing The Wonder of Learning exhibit is included in your Museum admission price as well as all membership levels. Guests who ONLY wish to view The Wonder of Learning exhibit may do so free of charge by checking in with Guest Services. Guests who wish to visit The Wonder of Learning exhibit AND the rest of the Museum must purchase admission.
The Portland Children’s Museum newsletter also mentioned that they have partnered with Red Tricycle Portland to feature local giveaways, news, and family fun! Red Tricycle Portland is a great resource for those of you in the Portland, Oregon, area for fun activities to do with your children or grandchildren! Red Tricycle provides Portland parents with five fresh picks a week for fun things to see, eat, and do with your kids in your neighborhood. On the website you can sign up for a free email newsletter.
Red Tricycle also has pages for Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.

The 27th Annual Bouquets to Art 2011 will be exhibited at the de Young Museum in San Francisco from March 15–19.
San Francisco Bay Area designers and garden clubs will display 150 floral arrangements to interpret and complement the museum’s permanent collection.
Bouquets to Art is the largest fundraiser held to benefit the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and one of the country’s premier floral events. Organized and produced by the volunteer members of the Fine Arts Museums Auxiliary, Bouquets to Art raises funds to support acquisitions, special exhibitions and education programs.
Bouquets to Art Hours
* Tuesday through Saturday, March 15–19, from 9:30 am–5:15 pm
* Extended hours on Friday, March 18, until 8:45 pm
* Museum members-only night on Wednesday, March 16, from 6–8 pm

If you are in the San Francisco area with your family, a fun adventure awaiting you is the Presidio Habitats exhibition at the Presidio of San Francisco, a 1,491-acre National Historic Landmark and national park site. The FOR-SITE Foundation is partnering with the Presidio Trust to sponsor the exhibit through May 2011, Wed-Sun. See the Walking Map to find the eleven artworks scattered in the northwestern corner of the park. The pdf brochure can be downloaded here. The July 2010 Sunset Magazine had a nice article about it but I could not find it on-line. Here is another Sunset Magazine article about rediscovering the Presidio.

Writing my blog about corn mazes reminded me of the really neat labyrinth at San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral. There are actually two of them there. One is inside and one is outside. I think walking the labyrinth is so peaceful and cleansing. The labyrinth only has one path so you can’t get lost and mixed up like you can in a corn maze!
A world-wide labyrinth locator is available from The Labyrinth Society and Veriditas. If you think you want to create one of your own, check out angelfire.com for more information. Grace Cathedral also has an online finger meditation you can try – choose your icon and trace your mouse tracks through the labyrinth – with or without music playing. It’s very nice. Give it a try!
This could be a hard activity for the whole family to do – at least with younger children. It’s just not quite the same feeling when you are chasing after way-stepping little ones. And I certainly would not want to explore it with little ones if other people are there trying to walk it either, as it would probably interrupt their meditation. It is a much more personal experience probably more in line with some “me time.” I do believe that with the proper explanations and expectations first worked out with older children, that they might come to enjoy it.
I just know that I really, really love to walk the labyrinth.

The King Tut exhibit is back at the San Francisco de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Marilyn Newton of the Reno Gazette-Journal wrote a great article about it and has some great photos posted.

The Target Community Webpage gives you the opportunity to enter the city closest to you to list museums and art venues you can visit for free or with discounts thanks to sponsoring from Target. Target gives 5% of its income to communities. Their newspaper ad says that is over $3 million every week.

Chocolate, dark chocolate can help you stay healthy and can even help you lose weight! Great news for us chocolate lovers! Ghirardelli has 100% chocolate drops that I love to nibble at 3 in the afternoon. Ghirardelli Square in San Francisco is one of my favorite haunts – and across the bay is the San Leandro Factory Outlet.
Then there is Hershey, PA; Chicago and Times Square for Hersey’s Chocolate! Here are videos of the Hershey Factory tour. I am told it is a tasty time! Enjoy!
