There were some great surfing photos from Seal Beach that in the Long Beach Press-Telegram and then even more were on the newspaper website. Here’s the photo gallery. Enjoy!

Presidio Habitats Exhibition

July 23, 2010

If you are in the San Francisco area with your family, a fun adventure awaiting you is the Presidio Habitats exhibition at the Presidio of San Francisco, a 1,491-acre National Historic Landmark and national park site. The FOR-SITE Foundation is partnering with the Presidio Trust to sponsor the exhibit through May 2011, Wed-Sun. See the Walking Map to find the eleven artworks scattered in the northwestern corner of the park. The pdf brochure can be downloaded here. The July 2010 Sunset Magazine had a nice article about it but I could not find it on-line. Here is another Sunset Magazine article about rediscovering the Presidio.

Reno Rain, No Rain…

July 16, 2010

Today in Reno the weather was absurd! We were caught in an absolute downpour of HUGE raindrops complete with lightening bolts, sheet lightening and thunder at Trader Joes near McCarren and Virginia, yet when we looked towards the Southwestern hills, the sun was shining. Sure enough, when we got to the Southwest end of town, there was only heat (92 degrees) and dust — no rain fell at all! I think I heard the weatherman say that a third inch of rain fell in a half hour! We were soaked running into Trader Joe’s but as we waiting in line to check out, we saw the downpour drizzle into nothing at all! The storm drains at all the corners were all flooded though! Cars were shooting up sheets of water as they slowed down to round the corner. That was fun!

Penny Lane Wins 15th Annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Nationals

July 12, 2010

Penny Lane (and proud owner Trish Ausilio of Buena Park, California) was this year’s winner of the 15th Annual Wienerschnitzel Wiener Race at the Los Alamitos Race Track in Cypress, CA, took place last weekend (Saturday, July 10, 2010). Here’s a short blurb from the Orange County Register. The fun outing proceeds benefited the Seal Beach Animal Care Center. The Los Alamitos Race Course presented an additional $5,000 donation to the Seal Beach Animal Care Center.

Also — check out this fun website full of dachshund information and hilarious songs: National Dachshund Races from Findlay, Ohio.

And then here you can meet Sammy Davis, a famous dachshund from Pleasanton, CA. This article has nine photos, too. Patrick Major is his owner.

Unconditional Love – Warren Buffett Credits His Father

July 8, 2010

One of Grandpa Ron’s most favorite people is Warren Buffett. I also thoroughly enjoyed his comments at the 2008 Women’s Conference. He is another person who stands out as a mentor and teacher for more people than he’ll ever personally know that he’s helped. This interview posted by Willow Bay (Anna Robertson and Erin Green produced the interview for Yahoo! News.) highlights his attitude and approach for life. In an exclusive interview with Yahoo! News and The Huffington Post, “he credited his father for teaching him how to live, and explained that all parents can make a “better human being” by offering their children unconditional love.”

Enjoy! Buffett Recounts the Best Advice He’s Ever Received

Toddlers Trying Lemons and Limes

July 6, 2010

Lemon pucker power! Austi had me laughing so hard when he kept putting the lemon in his mouth over and over while he winced every time. His face-making was so similar to these kids trying it in this video that I saw on Grandparents.com! Some think it is terrible, but I remember doing it myself as a kid, too! It had me in tears because I was laughing so hard!

Coloring Pages for Fourth of July

July 3, 2010

If you happen to be looking for some fun activities for your kids or grandkids to do this weekend with a theme of Fourth of July or Independence Day, check out the grandparents.com website – Here are some pages for coloring. While there I laughed while watching a video of kids telling jokes interspersed with laughing babies. You may have seen this already, but it is still funny.

Our First View of New Quail Babies in Reno

July 2, 2010

Just as Grandpa Ron and I were firing up our computers for a little office work around 8 pm this evening, we had a Quail Alert! Mama Quail was quickly leading about 20 baby quail across the vast expanse of our back patio while Papa Quail waited in the rear of the family to make sure that all were safe. We never saw so many babies with only 2 adults! I ran for my camera!

I quickly got two frenzied clips of the babies. Some stayed huddled on the warm patio facing the setting sun while most darted back and forth between the bird feeder and the huddled group on the patio. Then Mama seemed to look at me and said it was time to go! You will see her briefly toward the end of the clip. Then the babies started darting toward her. So I stopped filming. Then I caught them as they fled away!

Can you do a better job of counting them? How many babies are there?

This is the second video of the baby quail visiting the bird feeder with two adult quail at 8 pm on July 2, 2010 in Reno, NV. They scurried across the patio as fast as their little feet could move! They are so cute! RUN! Babies! RUN!!

More of my blogs mentioning and photographing quails and their babies are here.
