Grandpa Ron and I had fun watching the (mainly 3 & 4 year old) kids at Austin and Sydney’s shared birthday party at Pietro’s Pizza in Milwaukie, Oregon. Actually the Disney princesses and Spiderman combo worked out just fine! LOL! I don’t think the kids noticed – they just donned their princess tiaras and masks without hesitation! More important were the game tokens in the gift bags – and no one said anything about only tokens being in the bags! I think they all had a great time!

Afterwards, Grandpa Ron takes Austin on a car ride to go see the 4449 Daylight steam engine… Austin was amazed at how big the 4449 is!

With all the snow we got in the last several days, this article by Maggie O’Neil of the Reno Gazette-Journal is quite timely! Our weather station results are being used on TV! Reno KTVN Channel 2 local CBC station has ArrowCreek on their weather map. That’s us! 🙂 That’s because we are part of the NOAA volunteer weather network.
Don’t know if it will always be accessible but here is the weather from today on KTVN. ArrowCreek is on the map at about 3:15 minutes into it when he describes the Reno region. Yesterday’s broadcast on the web had ArrowCreek about 3:45 minutes into it, so I’d guess it should show up any time between 3 and 4 minutes into the weather.
Record setting snowfall in Reno and areas just to the north. 12″ at the airport as of 8 AM with as much as 24″ being reported from north valleys out to Silver Springs yet areas south such as Minden and South Lake Tahoe have not seen much. A very narrow band of moderate to heavy snow developed last evening and continues this morning. Winter Storm warning has now been continued until 7 PM this evening. The snow should begin to decrease late morning into the afternoon as this band moves south and east but areas within the snow band could experience several more inches this morning and during the early afternoon. Weak high pressure builds in for late today and Monday but enough moisture remains for scattered mountain snow showers and lots of clouds in the valleys.
Next chance of rain and snow will be late Tuesday into Wednesday as a Pacific systems moves towards the coast. Highs today in the low 40’s with 30’s at the lake.

The National Park Service has a great Kid’s page called Webrangers and you get to the fun stuff through the entry gate page by clicking the Enter button. I had fun solving the two train mysteries – click on the New Activity Railroad Connection to learn how to drive the steam engine and blow the whistle – among other things – while earning clues to solve the mystery. The Railroad Connection also has a nice rail/national park connection in the second mystery. I entered the site as a visitor. It looks like you have to sign up to do the other activities. Ah, ha! No – I was given the key. Tom Davies, from the WebRangers website, wrote me to say you can get in to the other WebRangers activities without signing up. From the entry page, just click on the “Just Visit” button and then, on the next page, “Come in and look around.”
More than 108,000 people have signed up to become WebRangers and he knows that many of them are not kids! You can read his note by clicking on the 1 comment at the end of this entry or by clicking on the title to get to its own page where the comment will be at the end. 🙂

There are so many little triggers that take me back to childhood memories with Grandma and Grandpa! Some are smells. Some are sights. Some are songs. I have some of them captured on my Shared Memories page. Grandparents.com also has their article What Grandkids Remember that I shared a while back on starting new family traditions.

I was “googling around” for toddler activities the other day when I came across Jean Warren and her fabulous preschoolexpress.com with wonderful ideas and activities for parents and teachers to do with toddlers and preschoolers. Do check it out – over and over again! Of course I loved the train theme (so does Grandpa Ron!) but all the ideas for learning, skill building, reading, singing, games, activities, parties, food and cooking with kids, etc., etc., etc., just go on and on! You’ll surely find some stations that will keep your toddler engaged and eager for more! Do check it out!

Today’s Long Beach Press-Telegram had an article by Dr. Harvey Karp about calming a baby. Since Abby has been colicky, I read with great interest what suggestions he had. The suggestion I wanted to pass on to my daughter was to try his 5 S’s he called the “calming reflex.” It is this: “It’s a virtual off switch for crying babies and on switchfor sleep that can calm even colicky babies in minutes or less,” Karp said. “The key is to imitate the womb environment with the five S’s: swaddling, side or stomach position, the “shhhhh” sound, swinging and sucking.” Let’s try that on Abby!
