Austin is Excited to be in Reno

December 30, 2009

The car trip from Portland to Reno went quite well with Austin. His version of ‘Are we there yet?’ is ‘Are we in Reno yet?’ We had to spend the night in Medford since the pass was closed due to snow. In the morning the glistening snow was gorgeous. The snow in the Sierras was beautiful, too, but the road was totally clear!

Once we got to Reno we had fun snaking up the driveway wih 3″ of snow. The driveway has just the wrong slant to it to get up easily… Austi and Papa played with trains after dinner. Now we make it to bed for a long winter’s nap. In the morning Austin and Papa will snow blow the driveway!

Snow – The Science Thereof

December 28, 2009

The Oregonian had a great front page article by Joe Rojas-Burke on the science of snow. Unfortunately, the same illustrations weren’t online, though. There was a side-bar on the uniqueness of snowflakes from “Snow Crystals” by W.A.Bentley and W.J. Humphreys, published in 1931. Here is a neat little list of snow crystal books on Amazon. We are headed into snow tomorrow, I think…..

Abby Coming Soon!

December 27, 2009

Austin is about to get his new baby sister Abby soon! The birthing process is coming along! Cyndi and Aron have just finished cleaning up the last of Christmas – that is to say, undecorated the tree and got it out to the curb. Now the house is all ready for the new baby. The plan is we are all going to go to Olive Garden for lunch! It worked eating Italian for Austin to decide to be born. Maybe it will work for his new sister, too! Cyndi also expected Abby would come the day we were planning to go back to Reno – that be tomorrow! We’ll let you know!!

Extraordinary Gifts

December 23, 2009

From the is The Extraordinary Gifts Of Christmas – Life Balance by Rev. Shannon A. White. Stop what you are doing and listen to the quiet voice within you. It’s an excellent read.

From the website at the end of the article: “Rev. Shannon A. White balances her professional life between being a Presbyterian minister, award-winning television news reporter, popular speaker and author. She has spent 13 years in churches in Connecticut and New York and is currently Associate Minister at Round Hill Community Church in Greenwich, Connecticut. Her most important role in life, however, is as mother to her 10-year-old daughter, Peyton. Together, they wrote How Was School Today? Fine…, due out in February 2010. They hope their book will help deepen communication between parents and their school-aged children.” Visit for more information.

Holiday Lights in Long Beach

December 21, 2009

Here is a map to check out the holiday lights in the Long Beach area courtesy of the Long Beach Press-Telegram. I still remember getting in the car with Grandpa and Grandma to drive around and see all the houses that were so prettily decorated for the holiday season in the Chicago area. I say ‘still’ because now I can do it with my own grandchildren!
