The Marble Bluff Fish Passage Facility is located near Nixon, NV at Marble Bluff Dam, on the delta of the Truckee River where it ends at Pyramid Lake. The Cui-ui are spawning in large numbers this year. This endangered sucker fish is found only in Pyramid Lake in Nevada. There is a series of locks, ladders and bypasses to help the fish get up the Truckee River to lay their eggs. Jeff Delong of the Reno Gazette-Journal has a front page article With cui-ui thriving, the whole river teems with several great photos – one with a whole flock of white pelicans waiting for the fish to fly out of the water right into their mouths…well, almost! This year may be a record run thanks to all the winter snow we had.
There are several you-tube videos of the fish ladders from last year’s run. Here’s one. When it is done it will show you more choices as well.

Here is a fun look at the Plankton in the ocean that look like Christmas decorations, snowflakes and angels. It was a neat surprise to find it on the Monterey Bay Aquarium blogsite.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a display of Sea Drifters in the Outer Bay that has been there quite awhile and is now going to get a new look – so you can visit the drifters until May 1. Here is a neat video on Jellyfish from the aquarium.

Fee waiver includes: entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise.

And to make the fun even more affordable, many national park concessioners are joining the National Park Service in welcoming visitors on this summer’s fee free weekends with the their own special offers.

Adventures in Nature! We got a card in the mail announcing this year’s summer camps at the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits and at the Natural History Museum of LA County. The camps are for students entering Kindergarten through 8th grade. Check www.nhm.org/summercamp. Adventures in Nature Summer Day Camp will be offered from July 5, 2010 to August 27, 2010. All classes are full day from 9 am to 3 pm. Registration begins April 1, 2010. To view classes and register please log on to www.nhm.org/register. When our daughter was small she loved to go to Happy Hollow Park & Zoo in San Jose, CA. A couple years ago it closed. Just saw that there will be a great Re-Opening on March 20, 2010. Check out the photos in the San Jose Mercury News article By Mayra Flores De Marcotte! How great will that be for the young adults with small children of their own who remembered the fun they had in the park so long ago! As part of the Measure P Safe Neighborhood Parks and Recreation bond measure approved by voters in 2000, the park closed in 2008 to undergo a $72 million green renovation. Sneak-A-Peek of the ‘new’ park here! Here’s a list of the Yelp Old Memories – it will be fun to see how the new ones after March 20 will compare!

You can search by location (county), activity, length of trail and elevation. Easy way to explore possibilities for spending some Green Hour Time with the kids and grandkids. 🙂

I was all set to write my blog tonight based on my reading of the new issue of National Wildlife by the National Wildlife Federation when I got drawn in to watch tonight’s PBS Television NOVA Episode Becoming Human Part 3. It was too fascinating. I had to watch. This link is good until 12/31/09 to watch it right on-line. So, tonight’s blog will be short to write but long for you to explore if you want to!
What is so fascinating is how it compares and contrasts with the National Wildlife article I was planning to tell you about – only it is about wildlife instead of humans. The article is called Desperate Measures: Struggling to adapt to global warming, wildlife species are changing their diets, behaviors and, in a few cases, even their genetic makeup by Jessica Snyder Sachs. The photos are great – especially the baby birds, baby squirrels, red and arctic foxes, and polar bears – actually they are all super! And… the article is very much worth reading!
This theme really is the same one that is in the NOVA program! Enjoy!
