Grandpa Ron and I took a stroll down the Seal Beach beach yesterday and could not believe the amount of trash washed up! Mixed in with the usual seaweed and driftwood were whole small trees, tree limbs, boxes, plastic bags and shopping carts! Blue ones, red ones, silver ones and green ones! Multiples of carts – all hung with seaweed and yucky muck! When the big rains wash the water down the rivers and flood channels, all kinds of garbage ends up in the ocean! It is a really sorry sight! If only people would clean up properly after themselves! We weren’t the only ones amazed. Here are some news stories that also depicted the mess:

This year’s Seal Beach Holiday Parade was just as much fun as it has been in the past. Fifteen reading therapy dogs from Beach Animals Reading with Kids (BARK) participated in the parade for the first time and handed out books to children along the parade route on the beautifully decorated Main Street of Seal Beach, CA. The Orange County Register reported that approximately 8,000 people watched the parade. It was a brisk night as reported in another article in the OCR so people cuddled up to stay warm. It still had lots of fun and enjoyment as the floats, dogs, cars and almost 100 groups participated – along with Santa at the end – in the 29th annual event! What a string of kites last Saturday! Jonathan Smith, Staff Writer for the Long Beach Press-Telegram, and Stephen Carr, Staff Photographer, had a great article “Winds of tradition” in Monday’s paper. The front page has a super photo of Grandfather Tony Kwon helping his grandson Clay fly a kite. Here is the link for all the pictures. Here is also The Orange County Register version by Jaimee Lynn Fletcher with photos by Michael Goulding. A blog post by Long Beach Family covers the festival. (This blog covers local family things to do.)
The festival was sponsored by The Japan America Society of Southern California (JASSC) and the Up Up & Away Kite Club. It’s free to the public and attracts around 10,000 visitors a year.
Japanese Kite Master Mikio Toki visited from his home and kite workshop in Chiba, Japan, to share his kites. Mattel sponsored workshops where kids could build their own paper kites. The Japanese Taiko drumming corp Daion Taiko performed a traditional drumming show to excite the crowd.
In spite of the strong wind, it was a lot of fun!

The last several years we’ve been here in Alamitos Bay we have had a visiting sea lion every now and then. My mom in Arizona calls him “her seal” because we first saw him when she was visiting us. She always asks if we’ve seen him lately. We went for a long time without seeing him – once or twice a year. Today he was sunning himself on the breakwater. He didn’t seem to care at all that boaters were going by him all the time. This Google map has a red star in the center – the sea lion was on the breakwater just below the star – on the thin line jutting in the water. You can drag the map up and around so you can see how he made his way up to the houses from the ocean near Seal Beach. Here are some pictures I took of him this morning.
The Houses are all around this area of the Alamitos Bay. The sea lion is on the breakwater in the middle of the photo.
A dragon boat crew practices their rowing while the sea lion stretches out on the breakwater.
The sea lion sits up to watch the jetskier as the jetskier watches him.
This dragon boat crew is also so intent on rowing that they don’t see the sea lion either. But he’s laid back down again.
Kayakers go in for a closer look.
Time for him to check out what is going on.
The sea lion turns over on his side.
He stayed and napped for quite a while. Then he quietly slipped back into the water. Later this evening he was back on the breakwater. One of the boat owners we talked to when we took the photos this morning said the sea lion has been hanging around more in the last five days…..

Once again the Orange County Register ScienceDude, Gary Robbins, has some interesting blogs posted. The first one is about all the giant squid that have been off the coast of Huntington Beach. The second one is about the Dolphins playing and slapping their tails off Bolsa Chica State Beach. The third one is about a C-17 body that will be moving from Long Beach through Seal Beach on its way to become a static training vehicle on the East Coast. Neat stuff!
