Sun Spots, Solar Flares, Aurora Borealis and …

March 11, 2012

Have those of you in the ‘northern’ states tried to see any aurora borealis from the sun flares (specifically Sunspot AR1429) happening lately? Northern Lights were spotted in the United States as far south as the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Oregon, Wyoming, Illinois, Montana, and Kansas. Goddard Space Weather Lab is sharing some very interesting interactive information on What’s up in Space?? There are photos there from each of the states mentioned. The Oregon one is from Beaverton, Cyndi!

‘What ifs’ for solar flares are discussed in the National Geographic News.

For ‘solar’ music and super photos, check out AuroraBorealisPage. The main page is here and it is well worth your time to checkout the totally awesome photos and videos available. Several webcams are here. Awesome video if you have a Facebook account is at ArticLightPhoto which I ‘liked’ separately for its awesome display!

Ole Salomonsen also has the video and more beautiful aurora borealis photos posted on Flicker here where there are also many more contributors to the Northern Lights group. LoneStarNorth posted recent Minnesota Northern Light photos there as well.

Grunion Run of 2012 – 8 pm Program at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium Tonight!

March 10, 2012

The Grunion Run of 2012 has started! – If you can make it, it would be fun to attend the 8 pm Program at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro, CA, for their Meet the Grunion Program followed by a visit to the beach to see these little fish for yourself! Here is more information about the program at the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium.

What is a Grunion Run????? Grunions are little fish only found along the Southern California Coast and northern Baja California. There are all kinds of jokes about going to see the Grunion Run along various CA beaches because it happens late at night.

Here is a video from National Geographic:

Khan Academy is an Amazing Treasure of Lessons!

February 19, 2012

An old November 14, 2011 issue of Time Magazine caught our attention last week in the waiting room of a doctor’s office. Most time-worn, old magazines hardly grab the attention, but this one was different. Unfortunately, as is often the case with magazines in doctors’ offices, the first integral pages were missing of the article “Education Can Save Us”Β  but we were so fascinated by the discussion of the Khan Academy, that we further explored it later on-line. It is simply amazing! Here is the Youtube introduction:

This FREE stockpile of lesson plans is well worth the attention of parents, teachers and students! We were looking at the lessons in beginning arithmetic. Some people complained about the lessons being a bit on-the-back-of-a-napkin crude, but considering how it all came about, it still helps students learn by drilling on the basics. Here is an article How Khan Academy Is Changing the Rules of Education by Clive Thompson from wired.com that explains how it evolved.

You can peruse the website without logging in. If you want to track your progress, you will need a Google or Facebook account as explained on the Getting Started page.

By the way, I found the missing pages (as well as the rest) of the article “Education Can Save Us” on-line as “When will we learn?” here by Fareed Zakaria.

Wonder of Learning: Portland Children’s Museum and Red Tricycle Portland

February 4, 2012

Tomorrow, Feb 5, 2012 at 10 AM, the Portland Children’s Museum‘s newest traveling exhibit, The Wonder of Learning: The Hundred Languages of Children Exhibit from Reggio Emilia, Italy, will be open to the public. Those of you who know me well also know that I’m big on education and languages. This exhibit captured my interest immediately! Do click on the link to explore the thought behind the new, more museum-traditional (hands-off) type of exhibit, along with concepts, questions and answers.

“Exploring education through multi-media galleries that speak to how young children imagine, invent and create, this exhibit expands the potential to support creative thinking and collaboration in our schools and communities.”

Viewing The Wonder of Learning exhibit is included in your Museum admission price as well as all membership levels. Guests who ONLY wish to view The Wonder of Learning exhibit may do so free of charge by checking in with Guest Services. Guests who wish to visit The Wonder of Learning exhibit AND the rest of the Museum must purchase admission.

The Portland Children’s Museum newsletter also mentioned that they have partnered with Red Tricycle Portland to feature local giveaways, news, and family fun! Red Tricycle Portland is a great resource for those of you in the Portland, Oregon, area for fun activities to do with your children or grandchildren! Red Tricycle provides Portland parents with five fresh picks a week for fun things to see, eat, and do with your kids in your neighborhood. On the website you can sign up for a free email newsletter.

Red Tricycle also has pages for Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego.

Grandpa Ron

January 22, 2012

Grandpa Ron has prostate cancer. I haven’t been socializing on-line much lately because Grandpa Ron and I have been pretty busy researching prostate cancer and treatments. We discovered we have a cancer center of excellence right close to our LA home. Grandpa Ron came home from the hospital last Friday after undergoing two days of treatment using hyperthermia and high dose radiation brachytherapy under the expert care of Dr. Ajmel Puthawala and Dr. Nisar Syad. We couldn’t ask for better care and caring! Jesse and John were absolutely super! So were nurses Sarah and Phong and aides Angelica and Marilou! Our sincere thanks to all of them!

Today Grandpa Ron is feeling a little rougher than yesterday, but he knows it will get better each day. It’s like after a good, hard workout – the day after isn’t too bad, but then the second day the body lets you know more ouch!

Grandpa Ron really wants to lay low and doesn’t want to talk about it much, so I hope the links I’ve included satisfy your curiosity.

In a couple of weeks he’ll start Monday through Friday sessions of radiation for 5 weeks.

Your kind thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated! πŸ™‚

We would not even know Grandpa Ron had cancer if it weren’t for a round with another kidney stone. Thanks to our GP, Dr. Howard Bland, and his referral to the expert urologist, Dr. Ruben Baghdassarian, we are on the current path. Dr. Baghdassarian calls it Grandpa Ron’s “Lucky Kidney Stone” because the tests done to treat it also revealed the cancer. As anyone who has had a kidney stone can attest, it still hurts!! But, now we hopefully have many more years together for more grandpa and grandma stories!

Happy Thanksgiving!

November 24, 2011

I hope everyone had a very nice Thanksgiving! We had a great time with my sister and brother-in-law. We haven’t laughed that hard in a long time! We are so thankful for our blessings and we pray for those who lost their houses, businesses, cars, musical instruments, etc. in the big Reno Caughlin Fire.
