Sherlock Holmes Mystery in Reno

July 27, 2009

The Wilbur D. May Museum in Reno, NV, has a new interactive exhibit Sherlock Holmes and the Clocktower Mystery. The Reno Gazette-Journal article by Carla Roccapriore in yesterday’s Sunday Edition. Set in Victorian London, it is like moving through a live version of the Clue board game. “It’s a multi-generational exhibit. People are never too young to learn and never too old to have fun with it.” said Bob Harmon, Washoe County Parks spokesperson, as quoted in the Roccapriore article.

For more details, see the linked article, call 775-823-6500 visit www.washoecountyparks.com or click this poster from the Washoe County Parks’ website.

There’s a little town full of all kinds of exploration called Bisbee, AZ. Visit the Bisbee Mining and Historical Museum ( a Smithsonian Affilliate) and see 1880’s electricity and copper ore and take the Queen Mine tour.

National Museum of the American Indian

April 20, 2009

The National Museum of the American Indian is one awesome museum with buildings and activities in Washington DC and in New York City. Since this is one of my interest areas, I have been a member of the NMAI even before it opened the DC museum. I have only enjoyed the magazines and on-line material but friends who have visited said the museums are great, too. Here is the calendar of events for both New York City and Washington D.C.

Shedd Aquarium in Chicago

April 18, 2009

Another one of my favorite places in Chicago is (guess!) Shedd Aquarium! Another aquarium! I should have majored in oceanography! The on-line exhibits are interactive and quite interesting.

The Freight Station Museum in Greeley, CO

April 16, 2009

Grandpa Ron was wondering why I have not put any TRAINS on the blog yet! He found his December 2008 Model Railroader magazine and said: This new museum in Greeley would be neat if you could find the website. Ha! That was an easy challenge for Grandma Sue & Google! Here is a pre-opening video on the web by Skip Weythman. Here is the main wesite of the museum which has not only a link to the Model Railroader magazine but also some awesome scenery photos, as well as other train buff stuff!

Children’s Museums

April 11, 2009

On a rainy day (and there are a lot of those in Portland, OR) Austin and his friends love to visit the Portland Children’s Museum. He even had his first birthday party there.

Last weekend in Monterey, CA, we discovered the My Museum where the kids were totally having fun.

As a kid, Austin’s Mommy enjoyed the Children’s Museum in San Jose, CA.

All of these children’s museums are just awesome places to explore! While on the internet I stumbled on the My Museum.com for the Children’s Museum of the Brazos Valley in Bryan, TX. It has some very interesting activities as well.

Co-worker Leslie says her grandson absolutely loves the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana, CA. Check that one out, too!

Found a Told U So blog entry for the Children’s Museum in La Habra. That traveling exhibit of “Ring of Fire” (through June 14) looks fun, too! The blog has LOTS of ideas on it, as well!

The Tucson Children’s Museum has several fun exhibits. Here are some pointers.

At the Carson City, Nevada Children’s Museum there are lots of interesting programs going on as well as the on-going exhibits.

Chicago Museum of Science and Industry

April 10, 2009

One of the main recurring events of my life while growing up in the Chicago area were the annual school trips to The Museum of Science and Industry. I loved the the great train layout exhibit and the doll house fairy castle exhibit. There are so many really cool exhibits these days….. check some of them out right here!
