The Great Reno Balloon Race is this weekend. The visitrenotahoe.com site has all kinds of pictures and info. The Reno momslikeme.com sponsored The World’s Largest Pajama Party this morning with Farmer’s Insurance. Here’s a Flickr slideshow from the RenoTahoe website including my favorite – The Energizer Bunny! This video is pretty awesome! There are lots more videos on the same page as that one. Enjoy!
Fiery Sunset Photos
September 7, 2009I love sunsets! I love catching really beautiful ones with my camera! Here are four shots from Saturday, September 4, 2009, over Reno, NV.
Sierra Wave Clouds, also known as lee waves, are unique to the Sierra Nevada mountains.More Quail Baths – Photos
September 6, 2009The quail indeed came back to the dust bath bowl this morning. (This is a follow-up from yesterday’s blog.) I looked for them earlier but they were not there. Then I ended up scrambling them because I didn’t expect them and they were there! The teenagers didn’t come back but one female took advantage of that and probably fluttered about for a good five minutes or so. This time I was ready with the camera.
A Male comes to watch the female digging in.
More males came back and watched her. She dug in pretty deep.
When she was done a male jumped in. He is one of the double topknotted ones.
Baby Quail Take Dust Bath
September 5, 2009This morning we woke up to California Quail calls just outside our bedroom window. We started out watching several of the birds on the short wall but then we realized the real action was going on between the wall and the window. A whole family with teenagers were fluttering wings and scratching and flipping dirt like crazy. Five of the teenagers were in the hollow of sandy dirt by three small rocks. Dad stayed on the wall standing guard while Mom guarded the other direction. Three teenage females were scratching around the yucca while their 4 brothers and one sister did the dirt bath thing. Then two of the boys hopped onto a larger rock and pretended to be Dad and then played King of the Hill. The dad of this family has a double topknot and it looks like three boys all have double topknots, too.
Then the warning call sounded and they all scattered under the Russian Sagebrush. A squirrel ran to the dirt bath area and frantically dug further under the small rocks – like he knew he had buried his stash of stolen bird seed there somewhere! Then he frantically covered it all up again to hide his exploits and scantered away.
The birds immediately came back and started their scratching and bathing all over again. Then the squirrel came back to scare the birds away again and dug some more. This time he was letting the dirt fly everywhere as he dug frantically around the rocks again. The seed had to be there somewhere!
Then he reversed his digging one more time and took off. The birds came back and pecked and scratched – must have been that bird seed! Then after a few more wing stretches and flying dirt, Dad said it was enough and the family left to continue their morning trek across the land.
My camera was still in the car in the garage. I was afraid that if I moved across the window to go get it that it would spook them so I just watched the entertainment… Tonight my camera is ready. If they decide to go for another bath tomorrow morning, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to get some pictures! Given the look of the spot, it is a favorite one!
Teenage Quail
August 23, 2009Photos of Bunny at Bird Feeder
August 22, 2009Ok, so we’ve had bear, squirrels, voles, mice and rabbits at our bird feeders lately. This morning we discovered a bunny rabbit munching away and I got a few pics from around the corner and through the window screen (inside the house) before he scampered away.
This morning we woke up to find this critter munching away at the quail food. Bunny feels somebody looking at it from inside the Big People House. Can’t see ’em but can sense ’em!Bunny is caught in mid-hop as it runs to hide.
Hot August Nights
August 10, 2009The Reno Hot August Nights string of events is over for another year. Sounds like the Beach Boys were awesome at the Peppermill. The cars cruising all over Reno, Sparks and surrounding area were fun to see. You may want to keep it in mind for next year. We saw lots of pre-1973 cars. More cars were there than ever before but , surprise, surprise, spending was down as reported here in the RGJ. Here is a Reno Gazette-Journal listing of articles and photo albums from this year including the Saturday parade and the trailer queens.
Phantom Galleries
August 9, 2009Phantom galleries are temporary art galleries that occupy vacant storefronts. It is an intriguing concept that Geralda Miller writes about in today’s Reno Gazette Journal. She interviewed photographers Dean Burton and Franz Szony and artist Chad Sorg. I agree with Chad Sorg that this is a great concept.
Sherlock Holmes Mystery in Reno
July 27, 2009The Wilbur D. May Museum in Reno, NV, has a new interactive exhibit Sherlock Holmes and the Clocktower Mystery. The Reno Gazette-Journal article by Carla Roccapriore in yesterday’s Sunday Edition. Set in Victorian London, it is like moving through a live version of the Clue board game. “It’s a multi-generational exhibit. People are never too young to learn and never too old to have fun with it.” said Bob Harmon, Washoe County Parks spokesperson, as quoted in the Roccapriore article.
