New Quail Babies

July 25, 2009

Today we saw two quail families with brand new, oh so tiny, baby chicks!! One family was at our bird feeder. The chicks are so cute!

I took lots of photos. Hopefully I will get some photos on the blog this week. I always think I will get to upload pictures on the weedend and then it is over and I’m into the next week already! Here they are!

This was a BIG day for us! I entered two competitions for book awards and Grandpa Ron and I went ring shopping. Now we’ll find out who is reading my blogs! :-))

Sunset Clouds and Big Baby Quail

July 24, 2009

The sunset over Reno tonight wasn’t that spectacular but the clouds put on a show of their own. The clouds to the west over the Sierras were all golden with highlights of Naples yellow. The clouds to the east were all red and rust hues.

The tiny baby Quail chicks that we saw two weeks ago are now about half the size of their parents. They still clammer and quick-step to keep up with the lead adult while the sentry adult in the back keeps chirping at them to keep moving. They run to and from the quail feeder we have for them at the edge of the patio. We counted 17 chicks this afternoon. We think it is three families…..

Leave No Trace

July 11, 2009

In today’s Reno Gazette-Journal there is a great article by Maggie O’Neill called A Hike With A View. In it she relates her experience with meeting the author (Mike White) of the guide book she was using (Afoot & Afield: Reno-Tahoe). The one take-away I get from the article is how ordinary people need to follow the “Leave No Trace” mantra when enjoying the outdoors. With the cutbacks in staffing at the U.S. Forest Service, the limited maintenance on the Jones Creek-White’s Creek Loop is even less. The Nevada All-State Trail Riders have done on-going trail maintenance for years. Kudos to them! But the public needs to stay aware and pick-up after themselves (leave no trace that you’ve been there!) so that we all can enjoy the parks and outdoors for many more generations.

Possible Plethora of Wildflowers

June 30, 2009

Because of the late, cool spring rains, the wildflowers in the Sierra Nevada may be in bountiful bloom in a few weeks. The warm weather that is expected this week will start them on their way. Actually, we’ve seen blue lupine, white prickly poppies, pink, red and light purple penstemon, and California poppies along the road already.

Some of our favorite wildflower books for the high desert are Sierra Nevada Wildflowers by Karen Wiese and Great Basin Wildflowers: A Guide to Common Wildflowers of the High Deserts of Nevada, Utah, and Oregon and Wildflowers of the Eastern Sierra and Adjoining Mojave Desert and Great Basin both by Laird R. Blackwell. Laird Blackwell also has Tahoe Wildflowers: A Month-by-Month Guide to Wildflowers in the Tahoe Basin and Surrounding Areas for the Lake Tahoe area.

Our mode of operation on our car trips, mainly on Highway 395, between LA and Reno is for me to give the high sign that I want us to pull off to the side of the road so I can pull out the books and camera to identify and record the latest splash of color along the road. According to the books, Horseshoe Meadow and Onion Valley are showy places. Also off of Highway 88 on Blue Lakes Road is another super spot. The mountainsides along 395 on the other side of the road from the Walker River splash with color. Carson Pass is another good place to find different wildflowers.

Activities in the Sierra Nevada

April 28, 2009

There are all sorts of activities to do in the Sierra Nevada mountains. The Virtual Sierra Nevada website is quite exhaustive: gold panning, hiking, skiing, biking, horseback riding, backpacking, kayaking, river rafting and more. Then there is lots of sightseeing as well – Yes, there are LOTS of little towns: Reno (biggest little), Truckee, Virginia City, Lake Tahoe, Mammoth, Bishop, … and beautiful parks like Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon, oh, I’ll get myself in trouble by trying to list them all and forgetting some so I’ll stop while I’m ahead…..check out the linked websites!!

The Reno Astros

April 26, 2009

A fun day at the baseball park can be had by all. You don’t have to go to a big stadium and spend lots of money either! Kids can be closer to the players in a smaller stadium or playing field. Check out the Reno Astros as an example! The Reno Astros have had many players go to the big show. For the Reno feel of baseball, check out the Reno Astros’ dugout shows.
