Quail Snow Angels

November 27, 2010

One of the quail obviously miscalculated its ability to walk on snow and sunk into it. Flapping its way out of the situation caused a beautiful snow angel – bird style!

Morgan’s Wonderland – A Special Needs Special Place

November 6, 2010

Inspired by my friend Rob’s Facebook status today about Special Education Week, I decided today had to be the day I shared an old article I ran across the other day. I had saved it because I wanted to share it with friends whose new baby has spina bifida. It is Ticket to Ride in the October 4th People Magazine.

Because I know several families with special needs kids, the article struck me as very special. Here was a dad who could do something – and DID it – to make the world a better place for not only his own special needs daughter Morgan, but for others as well.

Gordon and Maggie Hartman created Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, Texas. It is a place where kids can ride a train, a carousel, a swing or they can experience sensory activities such as the interactive music garden – all independent of their physical or mental abilities. Actually it is even better than that because special needs adults can also have these great experiences – maybe even for the first time in their lives.

ABC News ran a special report American Heart: Spreading Joy to Special Kids about the new park that opened last April 2010. Here is the vision for a park for special needs people as documented by Gordon Hartman in its conceptual phase.

The hours, pricing and directions are here.

2010 Women’s Conference Main Event is Today

October 26, 2010

We totally enjoyed yesterday’s session of the 2010 Women’s Conference in Long Beach, CA. We didn’t get tickets again (last year we missed out, too) so we are logged in to the White House blog site to get the streaming from the main day of the women’s conference to our conference room at work. You can do so from here. I have enclosed the blog from the White House here: Women’s Conference Live Streaming

I hope you are able to watch at least some of it because it is truly an awesome experience.

Talking Teddy Bears

October 24, 2010

Our videographer, 24KT Sound and Video, put together this little clip of the two teddy bears (that we received from Jan, the Best Man, and Marline, the Matron of Honor, at the wedding reception) as they mouthed our messages for each other as we had recorded during the reception. Ok, it’s sappy. But they’re our words for each other….. Enjoy!

2010 International Book Awards Recognizes Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too!

LOS ANGELESGrandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too! is an Award-Winner in the category of Childrenโ€™s Mind/Body/Spirit. JPX Media announced the winners and finalists of THE 2010 INTERNATIONAL BOOK AWARDS (IBA) on May 18, 2010.

About the Book

Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too! was written by “Grandma Sue” Susan Winter for children and grandparents alike. “Every day experiences turn into special moments for Grandpa Ron and Grandson Austin. The book captures some of those moments: Memories of compassion, character, patience and love,” Sue explains, “It hits on the message that we may seldom be given the opportunity to know the impact we make on another, even very young, individual. Live as though it will happen always and then cherish the memories.”

Grandma Sue divides her life between the LA area, Reno, NV and visiting grandchildren. Additional information about Grandma Sue and the book can be found on the mygrandmasue.wordpress.com web site. Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too! is available on Amazon.com or through Ingrambook.com.

Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too! is also an Award-Winning Finalist in the Childrenโ€™s Mind/Body/Spirit category of the National Best Books 2009 Awards sponsored by USA Book News.

Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too! will be on display in the New Title Showcase exhibit at BookExpo America, the country’s single largest book fair and annual gathering for the publishing industry, covering all genres of books, from May 25-27 in New York City.

About the International Book Awards

Wishing Good Friends the Best of Everything

April 18, 2010

This weekend my blog was quiet because Grandpa Ron and I flew to Des Moines, IA, to be part of the Central College (my undergraduate school) celebration in Pella, IA. David Roe, the President of Central College for the last ~ 12 years, his wife Betsy Roe, and daughters Caleigh and Caitlin were honored with a Texas-sized party in P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium last Saturday, April 17, from 5:30-8:30 p.m to celebrate their gifts to the community, David’s retirement and move to DALLAS. Both of them are very special and have made a difference in our world. I am sure they will also make their mark on Dallas! Lots of students, former students, faculty, former faculty, friends, family, and townspeople came to say good-bye to the Roes, listen to fun and funny stories from several speakers, sample the BBQ food of Central Dining Services and listen to the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Steel Pans and Jazz Combos of Central College. Lots of people dressed in western attire. Afterwards, the party continued up-town with a dance at the Pella Opera House. We had great fun!

Here are some photos (and one video) I took. A few were way across the gymnasium so they came out a little fuzzy. If other photos or articles get posted by others, I’ll link to them later.

Lovely Evening with Aunt Rose

March 17, 2010

Grandpa Ron and I had a wonderful time with Aunt Rose last night! It had been several years since we had last visited her. Shame on us! After dinner at the local Elephant Bar restaurant we continued our catching up with her over coffee back at her house. We had a great time! Hope to do it again soon!
