The Princess and the Frog Special Opportunity

November 23, 2009

According to the News Release in the paper yesterday, an exciting extravaganza is set to celebrate Disney’s newest animated musical “The Princess and The Frog.” Walt Disney Studios is opening its Burbank gates for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the studio which is normally not open to the public (not since the 1940s!). Also, all the Disney princesses will be there! Over 3.5 hours of family fun!

Prison Pups Get New Owners

November 22, 2009

At Juvenile Hall in Orange County Scout, Biscuit and Gizmo were released to new homes last Friday, Nov 20th. What a special, awesome program between the county’s Community Resources Department, the Probation Department and Another Chance for Love! Taking on extra duties of training, maintaining and bonding with the three dogs were nine young men (17 and 18 years old) as they learned what having patience is all about! This is a remarkable story. I hope they repeat the opportunity often to the young men there! If you are interested in adopting a dog in the Another Chance for Love program, contact Janette Thomas at acfl09@yahoo.com or 714-505-9235.

The Orange County Register blog by Samantha Gowen is here and her article is here. Another California Youth Authority project in Norwalk is also reported by Bethania Palma Markus. Great work! Kudos to Jeanette Thomas!

Kudos also to Sr Pauline Quinn! She has been involved with Pathways to Hope which also helps to start programs in prisons all over the United States where inmates train dogs to help the disabled. Pathways to Hope also has other programs.

Portland MAX Train Father-Son Separation Reunited

November 21, 2009

Oh, what a blessing! Oh, what a heart-wrenching story! Meet the Guardian Angel Orianne Greene who stayed with 3 year old Aiden until his dad returned on the next MAX train in Portland. Aiden and his dad got separated by a slamming MAX train door – Dad on the train and son on the platform! Every caring parent’s nightmare! Read all about it here on OregonLive.com! Kudos to Orianne! 🙂 I can only imagine my angst if such an incident happened to me and Austin!

Struggling To Adapt To Global Changes

November 19, 2009

I was all set to write my blog tonight based on my reading of the new issue of National Wildlife by the National Wildlife Federation when I got drawn in to watch tonight’s PBS Television NOVA Episode Becoming Human Part 3. It was too fascinating. I had to watch. This link is good until 12/31/09 to watch it right on-line. So, tonight’s blog will be short to write but long for you to explore if you want to!

What is so fascinating is how it compares and contrasts with the National Wildlife article I was planning to tell you about – only it is about wildlife instead of humans. The article is called Desperate Measures: Struggling to adapt to global warming, wildlife species are changing their diets, behaviors and, in a few cases, even their genetic makeup by Jessica Snyder Sachs. The photos are great – especially the baby birds, baby squirrels, red and arctic foxes, and polar bears – actually they are all super! And… the article is very much worth reading!

This theme really is the same one that is in the NOVA program! Enjoy!

Reducing Toddler Behavior Problems

November 18, 2009

Sometimes the best of our children or grandchildren get into what we adults would call ‘bad behavior situations.’ Sometimes it seems we’ve tried everything to straighten it out — but the bad behavior continues. Here is some interesting on-line reading to ponder over and to maybe give you some fresh ideas or concepts to try if you have a little one you are working with.

Ethics for Toddlers

November 17, 2009

Today’s radio commentary by Michael Josephson isn’t on his website yet. – It was about instilling ethics and building character in the very young by example and struck me as a topic for my blog tonight – but this story is close. – Or maybe today’s been such a bad day that this was the lesson and I don’t remember any more!

Here are some other interesting links to read up on how to help your toddler develop a good character:

Most important is what your toddler sees you doing – actions speak louder than words – and whatever you do, your toddler wants to do, too!

Memory Lane

November 16, 2009

Today was fun sharing our weekend adventures with the people at work and friends on the phone. It was like a trip down memory lane. We’d jump from one of our weekend adventures to someone’s remembered adventure from long ago. Had all kinds of smiles and grins. Just like the adventures in Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too!, once triggered the stories flowed from one cherished memory to another. Rainy days, sunny days, cloudy days all had their special moments. It was a lot of fun!
