The San Diego Zoo’s now 8-week-old panda cub is starting to open his eyes. From the zoo website: “Meg Sutherland-Smith, D.V.M. said the cub’s left eye is beginning to open, and he squinted when she used a small flashlight to test his vision. The 4th veterinary exam also revealed that the cub’s right ear is opening, although Dr. Sutherland-Smith says the 5.7-pound (2.73-kilogram) cub is likely not hearing sounds yet, only feeling vibrations.”

Western Artist Carole Hale is one of the featured artists this month at the Plumas Arts Gallery on 372 Main Street in Quincy, CA. The show opened last night during the annual Girls Night Out in Quincy. We enjoyed visiting with the artist – who is Grandpa Ron’s sister! See her website here. If you are in the Quincy neighborhood (Northern California) do stop by to see her digital color “Fauxtography” in person during the month of October.
Here’s another “bear experience” worth reading – from the Duncraft facebook page.
A beautiful leaf of a Chinese parasol tree adorned the front page of yesterday’s Orange County Register. More photos were on-line at <a href="http://www.ocregister.com/. I found another beautiful storyblog accompanied by totally awesome photos at Swizzlestix. Information about the Fullerton Arboretum is here. It is celebrating its 30th anniversary this October as described in the Cal State Fullerton Daily Titan. There’s a Children’s Garden and child education activities. Museum info is here. Enjoy!
Nick Rians of Fitness Workx has been running two consecutive contests for his workout clients since last July 1st. One is for losing the most weight. The second is for consecutive weight loss each week of the contest. This week is the last week. I have only lost 10 pounds but I have lost something every week. I’m tied for first place with another woman who will certainly win in the weight loss contest – I think she has lost over 30 pounds. But today when I weighed in before the workout I weighed more than last week even though my weight this morning was at its lowest ever in a very, very, very long time. I had also walked 3 miles earlier in the afternoon. Nick worked my butt off while he kept Grandpa Ron doing usual workout stuff. I actually ended up weighing in at .4 pounds less than last week after the workout! Woo! Hoo! I’m still in the game! Boy, am I tired tonight!
Fitness Workx also offers on-line training and training videos.
A friend of mine from Colorado with a two and a half year old boy said today that she just realized the pertinence of my book Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too!. All of a sudden he is is saying “Daddy do it!” or “Mommy do it!” or “I do it!” There are examples everywhere! They’re everywhere! They’re everywhere! This article on early exploration is from www.explorationsearlylearning.com. Jo@Mylestones shares an I Do It Too! moment. Ask Dr Sears.com has a good page of information, too, on dependence, independence and interdependence.
The last several years we’ve been here in Alamitos Bay we have had a visiting sea lion every now and then. My mom in Arizona calls him “her seal” because we first saw him when she was visiting us. She always asks if we’ve seen him lately. We went for a long time without seeing him – once or twice a year. Today he was sunning himself on the breakwater. He didn’t seem to care at all that boaters were going by him all the time. This Google map has a red star in the center – the sea lion was on the breakwater just below the star – on the thin line jutting in the water. You can drag the map up and around so you can see how he made his way up to the houses from the ocean near Seal Beach. Here are some pictures I took of him this morning.
The Houses are all around this area of the Alamitos Bay. The sea lion is on the breakwater in the middle of the photo.
A dragon boat crew practices their rowing while the sea lion stretches out on the breakwater.

The sea lion sits up to watch the jetskier as the jetskier watches him.
This dragon boat crew is also so intent on rowing that they don’t see the sea lion either. But he’s laid back down again.
Kayakers go in for a closer look.
Time for him to check out what is going on.
The sea lion turns over on his side.
He stayed and napped for quite a while. Then he quietly slipped back into the water. Later this evening he was back on the breakwater. One of the boat owners we talked to when we took the photos this morning said the sea lion has been hanging around more in the last five days…..
