Games To Play While Waiting
August 1, 2009Grandparents.com has a great list of games to keep the kids occupied while travelling in the car, waiting in traffic in the car, waiting in line, waiting at the doctor’s office, or wherever. Grandson Austin loves to play the Bridge Game that I taught him while we are in the car in the city or suburbia. I learned it as a child from my grandpa.
It is part of the game to be the first one to say “Bridge coming!” to get the attention of the rest of the people in the car. As we get closer to the bridge – can’t be too far away – we time it with Ready, Set, and Wheeeeeee for as long as it takes to go under it. For tunnels we try to hold our wheeeeee to last as long as the tunnel.
Attention lags when there aren’t many bridges – except he came up with a variation on his own (He’s 3) on the last trip. He started pointing out highway/interstate/freeway sign ‘bridges’ that went over the road. As we went under , he said “Whe” short and sweet. It was too funny – and immediately became a variation of the game.

Sherlock Holmes Mystery in Reno
July 27, 2009The Wilbur D. May Museum in Reno, NV, has a new interactive exhibit Sherlock Holmes and the Clocktower Mystery. The Reno Gazette-Journal article by Carla Roccapriore in yesterday’s Sunday Edition. Set in Victorian London, it is like moving through a live version of the Clue board game. “It’s a multi-generational exhibit. People are never too young to learn and never too old to have fun with it.” said Bob Harmon, Washoe County Parks spokesperson, as quoted in the Roccapriore article.

Gardening with Kids
July 20, 2009One major activity I looked forward to with my Grandma was working in her wonderful gardens. She taught me how to plant seeds and take care of the seedlings. She taught me how to thin out and transplant the little plants. She taught me to know the difference between weeds and flowers. She taught me how to recognize a vegetable plant by its leaves. I learned patience in harvesting at the right moment. I learned joy in arranging flowers in vases. Gardening was definitely an every day activity to her that was magical to me.
www.grandparents.com’s article is a how-to to provide the same experience to your kids and grandkids.
Dry Creek Garden in Reno, NV has some fun ideas for different gardens for the children to plan.
The Colorado Master Gardeners website also has great information.
The University of Illinois Extension has a guide as well.
The First Moon Walk
July 19, 2009I know lots of young parents like my daughter aren’t old enough to remember July 20, 1969, the day Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon for the first time. But I am! And I remember what I was doing on that day! My guess is that a lot of people do! I was in Tirol, Austria on a summer German language program for high school students. The newspaper headline on the street shouted “Der Mond ist jetzt ein Ami!” which translated means “The moon is now American!” We were proud but puzzled because we saw it as “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind” just as Neil Armstrong had said – for the whole world, not just the United States. It was my first “grown-up” lesson on different points of view – how one action could be understood so differently, depending on your own experiences and family/cultural teachings. Of course, how many different ways can you interpret the planting of the US flag on the surface of the moon??
Also see National Air and Space Museum Apollo 11
website for more info on the moon landing. Here is a 3 minute video from there on Apollo 11. Of course, there are lots of other interesting things to see at the National Air and Space Museum both in person and on-line.
Relive the Apollo 11 timeline by following the Twitter until July 24. It started on July 16th, when the mission launched. Follow @ReliveApollo11 or use #Apollo11
