Grandpa Ron and I had a great Sunday! We started by going to the Wayfarer’s Chapel for the Sunday service. The celebrant, Jonathan Mitchell was brilliant as always. We really get a lot out of the services. The chapel is a very special, spiritual place for us. To top it off, the Wayfarer’s Chapel Gift Shop ordered more copies of my book Grandpa, Do It! I Do It, Too! as they had sold out of the ones they had! Woo! Hoo! After a wonderful patio lunch in the warm sun and light ocean breeze at the San Pedro Doubletree Hotel, we did a quick tour of the harbor and then did our weekend chores. It was a super day!

People aren’t the only ones inconvenienced or bothered by this last series of rain storms. Several (30 in 48 hours!) brown pelicans were dazed and confused. They had lost their protective waterproof coating probably thanks to storm drain runoff. Luckily they were rescued by the International Bird Rescue Research Center in San Pedro, CA last Thursday. Here is the Long Beach Press-Telegram story by Sandy Mazza called Storm-buffeted pelicans recuperating in San Pedro. By 7 pm on Friday they had 60 pelicans with another 20 on their way from Santa Barbara to their facility in San Francisco Bay.
Here is a KCBS 2 news video about the birds being rescued and rehabilitated at the San Pedro International Bird Rescue Research Center.

Yesterday Grandpa Ron and I went for a fun hour cruise on the Pacific Spirit from San Pedro. Spirit Marine runs the trips. There are several ones to choose from. There are also dinner cruises and party boats available to rent. On our cruise (as with all of them I am sure) the captain narrated points of interest. We saw lots of baby sea lions sunning themselves on the various platforms available to them. They were so cute! It was $12 for adults and $6 for children. Lots of children were on our cruise. They seemed to enjoy it very much, too!

The Daily Breeze reports there are lots of Blue Whales off the San Pedro coast this year. Seems like lots more than in the past. The Aquarium of the Pacific has a Whale Watching 101 site about all the sealife in the San Pedro Channel. The Daily Breeze also has another 8/1/09 article by Sandy Mazza with photos and Blue Whale Fact Sheet. Here is a CBS News video.
