Happy Earth Day! I spent it cleaning house with soap & water and vinegar and such! Such fun! It would be more fun with my husband, or my sisters, or even the grandchildren! Ah, well. It’s looking good! 🙂
Here are Earth Day celebrations around the world.
This one’s for kids from the EarthDay2012 website (not be be confused with the earthday.org website!):

Here is a fun look at the Plankton in the ocean that look like Christmas decorations, snowflakes and angels. It was a neat surprise to find it on the Monterey Bay Aquarium blogsite.
Here is the series on environmentalgraffiti.com by Michele Coilet using photos by Dr. Richard Kirby, a Royal Society Research Fellow at the University of Plymouth.
The Monterey Bay Aquarium has a display of Sea Drifters in the Outer Bay that has been there quite awhile and is now going to get a new look – so you can visit the drifters until May 1. Here is a neat video on Jellyfish from the aquarium.

Indeed, on Tuesday 131 mph winds came across the mountaintops of the Sierra Nevada causing havoc in Reno below. Winds of 97 mph were registered in southwest Reno. Our weather station registered 89 mph before we were hit by a power outage! Rats! I really wanted to know what we had! We lost 4 flat tiles and one capstone from our tile roof as far as we can tell. One pole holding up one of the weeping cherry branches was toppled. Everything else looks fine. Thank goodness!! Here’s the Reno Gazette-Journal story. Calvin Palmer blogged about it, too!

Last Friday and part of Saturday Grandpa Ron and I were on the campus of Central College in Pella, Iowa. I am on the National Advisory Committee, which meets once a year on campus to advise the college president. We also had a tour of the new Education and Psychology Building which is one of the highlights of sustainability initiatives on the campus. It is a very beautiful building – and very GREEN! Go environment! Central is hoping to attain a LEED Platinum rating for the newest green building on campus.

Just got a phone call about an Earth Day Celebration tomorrow, April 18, 2009, at the LA Water Replenishment District Offices in Whittier, CA, from 10 am until 2 pm.
Earth Day 2009 is a free community-wide event that seeks to promote environmental awareness and education for the whole family. The event features educational booths, interactive workshops, water recycling tours, puppet shows, train rides, arts and crafts, activities for children, and entertainment such as music, an environmental magician, and more.
